THE TWO GREAT COMMANDMENTS

“Jesus said unto him, thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.” -Matthew 22:37-40 KJV

Personally, I feel the Jewish lawyer was already in error for asking Jesus to tell him the greatest of all the commandments. If God gives you a hundred instructions, you should do all, not the ones you think are most important.. if you love and fear Him. The lawyer asked for one most important commandment, but, Jesus gave him two: “… thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.“ Secondly; “thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself“.

Out of the ten basic commandments that God gave to Moses to deliver to the children of Israel, Jesus picked out those two as the greatest of them, because, if you love God with all your heart, with all your soul, and all your mind, you will certainly obey all other commandments! And if you love your neighbor as you love yourself, you won’t bare false witness against him or her, you won’t sleep with his or her spouse, you wouldn’t steal from someone you love, you can not kill someone you love, you wouldn’t covet someone’s possessions if you love them. And, you would respect your earthly parents, if you love yourself! Seven out of the whole ten commandments were about us humans, while only the first three were about God!

So, if you love God with all your heart, you would have obeyed the first three commandments. If you love your neighbors as you love yourself, you would comply with the other seven! So, don’t claim to love God when you’re hurting yourself and or other humans. “By this we know [without any doubt] that we love the children of God: [expressing that love] when we love God and obey His commandments.“ 1 John 5:2 AMP.
